On August 29th, 1996, I got my PADI Openwater certification in Cairns, Australia. I took a five day course with Pro Dive, which consisted of two days theory and pool training, and three days of diving on the Great Barrier Reef. These last three days are spend on a boat (in my case the Stella Maris), where you also sleep. It was a real fun thing to do, and even the food was good. We got to make four dives necessary for certification, and five additional fun dives, including one night dive. It's some way to get certified!!
Some Butterfly Fish
As we made our way from Cairns to Brisbane, I got one more opportunity to dive. This was on Lady Elliot Island (see our Australia pages for more on the Island itself), and I had the chance to do two more dives. On one of them, I saw a big moray eel, a few barramundi cods, and a butterfly cod.

As we both love to snorkel as well, we decided to buy ourselves a 'real' underwater camera. We decided on the Sea & Sea MX-10, and took it for its first test ride to Andros Island in the Bahamas. Later on we bought an Ikelite housing for our Canon EOS, which allows us wide angle and macro photography as well. And we now also entered the digital era!
